Google launches new email service dubbed ‘Inbox

Google Inc launched an email service called 'Inbox' on Wednesday that will better organize emails and display information such as appointments, flight bookings and package deliveries in a more user-friendly way.

Google said it was sending out invitations to selected Gmail users to try out the new service. Users can also email the company at inbox@google.com to get an invitation.

For now the new service is being provided alongside Gmail, which was launched in 2004. It will be available on the Web as well as on Android smartphones and iPhones.

"Inbox is by the same people who brought you Gmail, but it's not Gmail: it's a completely different type of inbox, designed to focus on what really matters," the company said in a blog post.

Google said Inbox displays real-time updates to emails — for example, showing the delivery status of items bought online.

It also shows reminders in a more accessible way that allows users to more easily keep track of chores and appointments.

The company said the new application also enhances features that are already available in Gmail

that allow users to view purchases and bank account statements grouped together.

Google's shares were up 1.7 percent at $547.33 in early afternoon trading Nasdaq.

Twitter unveils ‘Fabric’ platform for developers

SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter on Wednesday set out to weave itself into mobile applications with a free "Fabric" platform to help developers build better programs and make more money.

Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo touted Fabric as "the future of mobile software development" while unveiling the platform at the one-to-many messaging service's first conference for makers of applications for smartphones or tablet computers.

Fabric consists of software tools to tackle challenges such as stability and distribution of applications as well as streamlining user log ins and placing ads.

The move could build Twitter functions directly into new mobile apps, which could greatly expand the reach of the messaging platform.

Twitter has been under pressure to build up its ranks of users, and making itself a global foundation for sharing, communicating, and placing money-making ads would put it at the heart of modern day mobile Internet lifestyles.

A kit for making sense of application performance data is built on Twitter-owned Crashlytics, while ad management uses the San Francisco-based company's MoPub mobile ad exchange.

"We started Fabric more than a year ago to take on, tackle, and solve challenges faced by developers," Crashlytics co-founder and Twitter product manager Jeff Seibert said during a keynote presentation at the Flight conference for mobile developers.

Fabric puts Twitter at the heart of letting users share comments in real-time from inside mini-programs and providing a common way for people to log in, according to demonstrations at the day-long San Francisco conference.

Fabric promised to weave Twitter into all kinds of mobile applications around the world by letting developers easily build in "tweeting" and logging in using Twitter IDs.

"Nothing is as powerful as someone using your app and wanting to share a moment of pure joy being able to do that instantly," Seibert told developers.

The list of more than 100 "beta" partners for the Fabric launch included McDonald's, Spotify, Jawbone, and the Wall Street Journal.

"We view Twitter as a very complementary news channel to all of our news brands," said News Corp senior vice president of strategy Raju Narisetti, whose company operates the newspaper.

"Now, our app is part of the conversation people are having about our journalism."

Fabric is being used to quickly detect and fix bugs at streaming music service Spotify, and to let users share songs, according to global business head Jorge Espinel.

"Music is social and meant to be shared, so having a simple implementation to have fans share music via Twitter is critical," Espinel said while taking part in the keynote presentation.

Fabric kits were made available to developers at Flight and will be rolled out broadly to the developer community in coming days, according to Twitter.

Fun, functional or hip applications are seen as vital to the popularity of smartphones or tablets.

Microsoft's sales rise, helped by Nokia acquisition, and investors notice

SEATTLE: Sales in the PC business are still in the dumps. Traditional software sales are losing steam to cloud services. And many venerable technology companies are struggling to leap from the old way of doing things to the new.

Microsoft? Steady as she goes.

While the company still has much to prove in markets like mobile phones, Microsoft on Thursday offered tantalizing signs of progress in the transformation of its business. In the last quarter, the company had a 25% increase in sales, largely because of its acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone business.

"Overall, what we see is the increasing competitiveness of our products," Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chief executive, said in a conference call with analysts.

For the three months that ended September 30, Microsoft's fiscal first quarter, the company said its net income was $4.54 billion, or 54 cents a share, compared with $5.24 billion, or 62 cents a share, a year ago.

The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters was 49 cents a share for the period and $22.02 billion in revenue.

The dip in profit was largely the result of $1.14 billion in costs associated with the company's acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone business. Without that expense, Microsoft would have reported earnings of 65 cents a share.

In July, Microsoft announced plans to reduce costs by laying off up to 18,000 employees, or about 14% of its global workforce, by the end of June next year. Most of the cuts are related to the company's Nokia acquisition.

The results impressed investors, especially when compared with weak results from other technology bellwethers like IBM. "I thought these were stellar numbers in a choppy IT spending environment," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets.

Microsoft shares rose 3% in after-hours trading.

Microsoft's resilience stems in part from the reluctance of corporate customers to abandon their deep investments in the company's products. Microsoft has also tried to differentiate itself from new competitors going after its corporate customers, like Amazon and Google, by giving them options to tiptoe into cloud computing while continuing to run their own software.

The addition of Nokia to its business added $2.6 billion in phone hardware revenue that did not exist for Microsoft during the year earlier period. Without that boost, Microsoft's revenue would have grown 11% in the quarter.

Microsoft has struggled to find its footing in recent years as the personal computer and traditional software businesses have shown signs of weakness and newer technologies, like mobile and cloud computing, have surged. Microsoft has stumbled badly in mobile. Nokia's share of the smartphone market has declined in recent quarters. Microsoft said it sold 9.3 million of its Lumia smartphones in the quarter, representing what it called modest growth from a year earlier.

"We have work to do in phone," Amy Hood, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said in a phone interview.

Microsoft's cloud business, though, is showing signs of strength that have encouraged investors. During the quarter, the company said its commercial cloud revenue grew 128% during the quarter from a year ago. Microsoft's commercial revenue, of which its corporate cloud business is a part, grew 10%, to $12.28 billion.

Microsoft has been trying to turn its traditional Office applications business into a cloud business, where customers pay a subscription fee for the product. Microsoft said it has 7 million subscribers to the home and personal version of Office, 25% more than in its fiscal fourth quarter.

Even Microsoft's Surface, its tablet computer, improved in the quarter, with sales rising to more than $900 million, from around $400 million a year earlier. "I'm very proud of Surface Pro 3," Hood said, referring to the latest version of the product.

Microsoft is hunting for growth opportunities beyond the PC, the device to which its fortunes have been tethered for most of its 39 years. According to IDC, the technology research firm, worldwide shipments of PCs declined 1.7% during the quarter, a poor showing for the industry but a smaller decline than the firm and many investors had previously expected.

Smartphones and tablets have begun to handle many of the computing chores that were once exclusively performed on PCs. Microsoft sought to reinvigorate the PC market two years ago with the release of Windows 8, an operating system that was designed to power both conventional PCs and touch-based devices like tablets.

But Windows 8 has delivered disappointing results. Recently Microsoft announced plans for a new operating system, Windows 10, that will backtrack from some of the more radical design changes the company made in Windows 8.

Apple CEO says had 'very open' privacy talks in China: Report

BEIJING: Apple chief executive Tim Cook was quoted on Friday as saying he had "very open" talks on privacy and security with a senior Chinese official, days after a web monitoring group linked the government to a hack into Apple's iCloud service in China.

Cook's remarks, made in an interview to the official Xinhua news agency, were his first public comments since meeting vice premier Ma Kai in Beijing on Wednesday.

Cook's China visit has been overshadowed by a report by web monitoring group Greatfire.org, which alleged the Chinese government was involved in a sophisticated and widespread hacking attack on Apple users in China.

The government has strongly refuted the allegations, saying it has been a victim of hacker attacks itself.

The Xinhua interview made no mention of the attack. Asked about the Greatfire report, Apple has said it is "aware of intermittent organized network attacks" without giving details.

In the interview, Cook said one of Apple's priorities for China was to introduce the newly launched Apple Pay mobile payments service, and that he was still seeking to understand the steps needed to do so.

"China is a really key market for us," Cook told Xinhua. "Everything we do, we are going to work it here. Apple Pay is on the top of the list."

Chinese media had reported last month that Apple was close to a deal with China's Unionpay card network to launch Apple Pay in the world's most populous country.

Cook, on a four day trip to China, attended a meeting of the advisory board of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management on Friday. He had also toured a factory of supplier Hon Hai Precision Industries in central China.

Apple's Tim Cook Makes Boldest Bets Yet With New iPhone, Apple Watch

Apple Inc. wasn't the first company to make a smartphone or a tablet computer. But its iPhone and iPad redefined those products, helping to make Apple the most valuable company in the world.

Now, Apple is betting that it again can succeed where others have struggled, by changing the way consumers pay for purchases, how they think about a computing device on their wrists and how much they're willing to pay for a phone.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook on Tuesday introduced a new payments system for mobile devices, a series of sleekly designed smartwatches and a pair of larger iPhones.

The blitz of new offerings—incorporating hardware, software and services—aims to resolve questions about Apple's ability to innovate under Mr. Cook, and highlights its willingness to tackle the thorniest problems facing technology companies, and their users.

"This is one of the most important days in Apple's history," said Mr. Cook in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "Innovation is alive and well at Apple. You can scream it from the rooftops."

Each of the three initiatives faces challenges. Existing mobile-payment systems have failed to convince consumers that they are superior to swiping a credit card. Smartwatches and fitness bands have yet to sell in big numbers. And with its new top-of-the-line phone, Apple is asking consumers to pay more at a time when smartphone prices are plunging.

The new offerings "are pretty strong demonstrations of Apple's unique credibility to make products that resonate with consumers," said Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. He added, speaking of the new Apple Watch, "The question is how mass market can this be."

Here's a look at three bets:

Apple's move into mobile payments seems to legitimize overnight a nascent industry.

The new digital-payments service, Apple Pay, will let users buy merchandise simply by waving a newer iPhone or Apple Watch in front of a reader. Apple said it hopes to speed up the checkout process and, ultimately, to replace physical wallets.

The service uses a technology known as near-field communication, or NFC, that works by transmitting a radio signal between the device and a receiver, when the two are fractions of an inch apart or touching.

Previous efforts at mobile payments, from Google Inc., eBay Inc. and a host of startups, have foundered because few merchants participated. Payments using NFC technology will nearly double this year to $8.2 billion, but still make up just 2.5% of total mobile payments, according to market researcher Gartner.

Apple is attempting to solve that problem by lining up big payment networks like American Express Co., MasterCard Inc. and Visa Inc., as well as big-name retailers and restaurants like McDonald's Corp., Walgreen Co. and Macy's Inc.

"This should be a very natural extension of smartphone technology," said Gil Lauria, a Wedbush Securities analyst. "Imagine walking through Macy's and getting an offer for 15% off sent right to your phone and then being able to apply that just by flashing your phone at the register."
