Most of Internet Security 2012's real time protection features are much less obtrusive, though, and just run quietly in the background, keeping you safe. So Auto-Protect watches the files you access, quarantining threats before they're able to launch; Download Insight 2.0 uses data from other Norton users to warn you of dangerous files; Symantec's SONAR technology has been enhanced to detect even more malware; and an accurate spam filter integrated immediately with our Outlook installation, protecting our inbox from phishing scams, virus-packed attachments and assorted other junk.

If you tried Internet Security 2011 then most of this will appear very similar, but look closely and you'll begin to spot the new features.

So Norton's password management, form filling, antiphishing features and site safety ratings now appear in Chrome, as well as IE and Firefox.

Your addresses, passwords, and other details can now be stored in the cloud, so they're usable from multiple PCs.

Download Insight 2.0 now tracks the stability of applications, as well as their trustworthiness, so if other Norton users have found that a particular program always crashes then you'll be warned of that, in advance.

You can limit the internet bandwidth that Norton 2012 will use, for example allowing it online for critical updates only.

And if you do run into any problems, then the new Autofix option may be able to solve them itself. Just click Support > Get Support, and the system will scan your installation looking for configuration issues, automatically fixing anything it finds.

Norton Internet Security 2012 v19.8 ships with these improvements/fixes:

Google launches new email service dubbed ‘Inbox

Google Inc launched an email service called 'Inbox' on Wednesday that will better organize emails and display information such as appointments, flight bookings and package deliveries in a more user-friendly way.

Google said it was sending out invitations to selected Gmail users to try out the new service. Users can also email the company at inbox@google.com to get an invitation.

For now the new service is being provided alongside Gmail, which was launched in 2004. It will be available on the Web as well as on Android smartphones and iPhones.

"Inbox is by the same people who brought you Gmail, but it's not Gmail: it's a completely different type of inbox, designed to focus on what really matters," the company said in a blog post.

Google said Inbox displays real-time updates to emails — for example, showing the delivery status of items bought online.

It also shows reminders in a more accessible way that allows users to more easily keep track of chores and appointments.

The company said the new application also enhances features that are already available in Gmail

that allow users to view purchases and bank account statements grouped together.

Google's shares were up 1.7 percent at $547.33 in early afternoon trading Nasdaq.

Twitter unveils ‘Fabric’ platform for developers

SAN FRANCISCO: Twitter on Wednesday set out to weave itself into mobile applications with a free "Fabric" platform to help developers build better programs and make more money.

Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo touted Fabric as "the future of mobile software development" while unveiling the platform at the one-to-many messaging service's first conference for makers of applications for smartphones or tablet computers.

Fabric consists of software tools to tackle challenges such as stability and distribution of applications as well as streamlining user log ins and placing ads.

The move could build Twitter functions directly into new mobile apps, which could greatly expand the reach of the messaging platform.

Twitter has been under pressure to build up its ranks of users, and making itself a global foundation for sharing, communicating, and placing money-making ads would put it at the heart of modern day mobile Internet lifestyles.

A kit for making sense of application performance data is built on Twitter-owned Crashlytics, while ad management uses the San Francisco-based company's MoPub mobile ad exchange.

"We started Fabric more than a year ago to take on, tackle, and solve challenges faced by developers," Crashlytics co-founder and Twitter product manager Jeff Seibert said during a keynote presentation at the Flight conference for mobile developers.

Fabric puts Twitter at the heart of letting users share comments in real-time from inside mini-programs and providing a common way for people to log in, according to demonstrations at the day-long San Francisco conference.

Fabric promised to weave Twitter into all kinds of mobile applications around the world by letting developers easily build in "tweeting" and logging in using Twitter IDs.

"Nothing is as powerful as someone using your app and wanting to share a moment of pure joy being able to do that instantly," Seibert told developers.

The list of more than 100 "beta" partners for the Fabric launch included McDonald's, Spotify, Jawbone, and the Wall Street Journal.

"We view Twitter as a very complementary news channel to all of our news brands," said News Corp senior vice president of strategy Raju Narisetti, whose company operates the newspaper.

"Now, our app is part of the conversation people are having about our journalism."

Fabric is being used to quickly detect and fix bugs at streaming music service Spotify, and to let users share songs, according to global business head Jorge Espinel.

"Music is social and meant to be shared, so having a simple implementation to have fans share music via Twitter is critical," Espinel said while taking part in the keynote presentation.

Fabric kits were made available to developers at Flight and will be rolled out broadly to the developer community in coming days, according to Twitter.

Fun, functional or hip applications are seen as vital to the popularity of smartphones or tablets.
